The red chowder and clam cakes people link with Rocky Point came back to Warwick this year. They didn't return to the shoreline. They came back to a food court on Bald Hill Road, with indoor seating and a parking lot. Oakland Beach's Iggy's, the other half of Warwick's chowder story, says it is open year-round. With November days away, the city's two best-known chowder lines both have kitchens open. One of them is now about as far from the water as Warwick gets.
That changes the map. A bowl of Rocky Point chowder used to mean a summer trip toward Warwick Neck. Now it fits into a Saturday errand at the mall, in sleet if need be.
How the chowder got to Bald Hill Road explains why its new home matters. WPRI notes that Rocky Point Amusement Park closed in 1996 after filing for bankruptcy. The food outlasted the rides, though it moved around:
The December date slipped by about five months, so the chowder came back in late spring, as beach season was starting. This is the first winter it will be served in a building with heat and a roof. WBSM put the gap at four years without the clam cakes and Manhattan-style chowder that made the park's Shore Dinner Hall famous.
When the mall announced the comeback, general manager Domenic Schiavone told NBC 10, "We're thrilled to bring a piece of Rhode Island history home." The release NBC 10 quoted remembered "the smell of clam cakes wafting through the air" and "the unmistakable taste of that famous chowder."
The menu is short. The mall lists classic clam chowder, seafood sandwiches, chicken fingers and fries. Tim Weisberg of WBSM stopped in on a Saturday afternoon this year. He wrote that the red-broth chowder still had "plenty of chunks of clams, potato, and more," and that the clam cakes were "just as fluffy and perfectly fried as they were at the park." He also noted that nobody offered him tartar sauce, because anyone who knows Rocky Point dips the cakes in the chowder.
One piece of the old park menu didn't come back. The Shore Dinner Hall's full shore dinner of baked clams, boiled lobster and baked fish isn't offered, according to WBSM. The stand is built around chowder and cakes, the order that was always quickest at the park anyway.
The stand sits inside Warwick Mall at 400 Bald Hill Road. The mall's posted hours run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant hasn't posted hours of its own, so check with the stand before planning a late lunch around it. Either way, the food court is indoors in January.
During the four years Rocky Point's chowder was gone, Oakland Beach kept serving. Iggy's Doughboys & Chowder House in Warwick says on its own site that it is open year-round. As of this October, it opens daily at 11 a.m. for takeout and delivery. The same page cites its Best Clam Shack recognition from Rhode Island Monthly and a feature on CBS's The Early Show for best clam chowder in the country.
The stand started small. Iggy's family history says Gaetano Gravino was a hairstylist who took part-time work at a doughboy shack in Oakland Beach. When the chance came to lease the business, he and his wife, Sally, took it, and Iggy's Doughboy and Chowder House opened in 1989. The name came from a car with the license plate "IG-6." Their son David started calling his dad "IG," and that turned into "Iggy."
Next door is the sit-down version. Iggy's Boardwalk, at 885 Oakland Beach Avenue, advertises "Waterfront Dining All Year Long." David Gravino opened its Gazebo Bar and patio on June 15, 2015, and the full restaurant in November 2015, after customers asked for "something just like Iggy's but with waiters and a bar." Many recipes come from the original 1989 stand. The Boardwalk page lists clam cakes and doughboys along with lobster dishes and a raw bar. The Gazebo Bar looks out on Narragansett Bay.
So the two halves of Warwick's chowder story have now traded settings. The Oakland Beach stand, which looks like a summer business, says it stays open all year. The recipe from the old amusement park, which always meant summer, is now served indoors under mall lights.
The last stop on the map gives you a table away from Oakland Beach. The Crow's Nest is at 288 Arnolds Neck Drive. On its 2026 menu, New England and Manhattan clam chowder are $4.95 a cup and $7.95 a bowl. Clam cakes are $7.95 for six or $13.95 for twelve. The combo of three clam cakes and a bowl of chowder is $11.95. That's $4 over the bowl alone, about what three cakes cost when you order six. Its posted hours come from an older version of the site, so call ahead before driving over on a weeknight in winter.
Of the four stops, The Crow's Nest is the one whose menu lists both styles side by side, so a table can split one creamy and one red.
| Stop | Where | Chowder style noted | Setting | Hours to plan around |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rocky Point Chowder House | Carousel Food Court, Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road | Red, Manhattan-style, per WBSM | Indoor food court | Mall open M–Th 10–8, F–Sa 10–9, Su 11–6; confirm stand hours |
| Iggy's Doughboys & Chowder House | Oakland Beach | Award-winning chowder, clam cakes, doughboys | Takeout and delivery | Daily from 11 a.m., open year-round |
| Iggy's Boardwalk | 885 Oakland Beach Avenue | Clam cakes, doughboys, full menu | Full-service restaurant and bar on the water | Daily from 11:30 a.m., "all year long" |

Seen on a map, the four stops run from Bald Hill Road out to the water at Oakland Beach and Arnolds Neck. The Rocky Point stand is the only one with no water view. It's also the one you can reach without leaving a building you might already be in for a holiday gift or a new pair of boots.
The old park site and the Rocky Point name still belong to the shoreline. The recipe now has an indoor address. Anyone who grew up dipping clam cakes into red chowder at the Shore Dinner Hall can do it again at a food court table indoors, including in the gray months when the Warwick Neck shore is quiet. And if you want the bay in view, Iggy's Boardwalk on Oakland Beach Avenue says its dining room is open all year.
At Christina Phipps, we've watched Warwick favorites change hands and addresses since 1976. Rocky Point's chowder moving to Bald Hill Road is one more of those moves. If you'd like to talk about the parts of Warwick that matter to your family, from Oakland Beach to the Post Road corridor, we'd be glad to sit down with you. Schedule a Consultation.
